If you are a hobbyist who has a passion of woodworking, building models and complicated wall hangings, you would have to spend a long time cutting and drilling materials manually over a long period of time. Have you ever wondered whether there are any possible tools that can enhance the cutting and drilling process? If you have enough money to spend on such tools – a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) milling machine offers a precision cutting and drilling experience for both hobbyists and professionals alike. Read the rest of this entry »

If you are anything like me, the idea of buying, let alone actually USING a wheat grinder can be pretty intimidating. I am determined to accumulate a healthy-sized food storage and wheat is going to play a big role in that. I am also a fan of the mantra “store what you eat and eat what you store”. Thus it quickly became apparent to me that I needed to do some heavy duty research in order to uncover all the mysteries surrounding “wheat grinders” or “grain mills” as they are officially called. With the help of internet research, some hands on research at several neighbors’ houses, and multiple failed attempts in the kitchen, I have come up with a pretty good summary of what you need to know. Read the rest of this entry »

Make your choice between blade coffee grinder and burr coffee grinder is not that hard, you just need to know the differences and what you want, for example, what type of brewer you intent to use, blade grinder can only be used for automatic-drip coffee maker and burr grinder is good for espresso machines, French press or Turkish. Read the rest of this entry »

Lathe Tools

I’ve noticed that a lot of people seem to use their wood lathe tools pretty much indiscriminately, they fire up their lathe, get a piece of wood turning and grab whatever chisel, gouge or spear is nearest at hand and start carving away. This works to a certain extent, but results are not going to be as good as they could be. In order to turn a professional looking piece it’s absolutely necessary to use the right tools for the job.
So, what is the right tool? In some cases it’s obvious and easy to correct, but many people still don’t bother. Take roughing as an example. I know a lot of people who will make their roughing cuts with a skew chisel! Hard to believe, but I’ve seen it many times. Read the rest of this entry »

One of the best and worst things to happen to modern woodturning is the invention of the four jaw chuck for holding wood. While it is a great addition to the woodturner’s arsenal, it is also an expensive tool and many beginners find that it costs more than their wood lathe. Also, like many tools a cheaper version is aggravating and in some cases simply dangerous to use. One thing to remember is woodturning has been around for thousands of years and there are many ways to mount the wood without the newest fashions. The Jacob’s chuck is a great tool for all turners.
A Jacob’s chuck is designed for holding drill bits. It is the chuck on the end of the drill press or the electric hand drill. As such it is often used held in the tail stock of the lathe to hold a drill bit for putting a hole in a piece of wood in the head stock or vice versa. However, it may also be used to hold a piece of wood for turning. Read the rest of this entry »

Horizontal Milling Machine

There is not much of a difference between horizontal and vertical milling machines. Both of these equipments are indispensable in cutting parts uniformly and quickly. These days’ horizontal machines are becoming more popular due to its overhead arm and its arbor driven cutters. These are also very easy to operate with few steps to remember. Some of the benefits of using horizontal milling machines are discussed below:
Design and set up: If you are looking to manufacture products which are cost-effective and of high quality, then a vertical milling machine should be of great help. They have scientific designs suitable for dealing with various hard materials. The time taken for this process is minimal and so as the number of steps required operating it. There is no need for a large set up to install these machines and also no need to employ numerous workers. You can have substantially savings on the labor cost, which is often the key setback in a manufacturing environment. Read the rest of this entry »

A profession or hobby that uses a power-driven machine tool such as a lathe or drill to shape metal, is known as machining. The person specializing in its use is called a machinist. A machine shop that is run from home is called a home machine shop.
Most machining operations are those that remove metal from an item or those that add metals. There are typical tools that are used in home machining. A lathe is a machine tool that creates sections in circles by rotating a metal work piece. A drill or punch press is used to remove metal in the form of a hole. Some other tools that are used in machining are saws, grinding tools and milling machines. Read the rest of this entry »

Machine guards are devices that are used to protect users from a machine. They form a barrier between the user and the machine and thus help prevent any unforeseen accidents. Machine guards are available in many different types, and are generally manufactured for specific applications. For example, machine guards for vertical milling machines will be different in form to machine guards for horizontal milling machines, drilling machines and lathes. Read the rest of this entry »

Lathes are machine tools which can take a piece of material and perform various functions on it including drilling and sanding. They can be used on wood, metal and glass. While they are generally relatively small, there are also large industrial machine lathes which can handle greater workloads. There also combination lathes which can perform a variety of additional functions. They are versatile pieces of kit, and thanks to Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) technology they can now be operated from a computer rather than cumbersome, manual controls. This makes them much easier to schedule and operate, continually churning out parts with occasional supervision. Read the rest of this entry »

  1. Safety should also be practiced in working with heavy machinery in an industrial setting. More often than not, after having learned by heart the industrial machine parts that are required for work, some drivers become complacent in practicing the safety precautions in handling heavy machinery in a warehouse. This is where the trouble begins - when one no longer is conscious of his environment, which he knows very well is a major part in the over-all safety precautions of his work. It should not escape one's mind how dangerous these machines are. They are even the leading causes of work accidents and the only time that one can forget about safety measures is when one stops thinking about the harm these machinery can do in one's life. For the pedestrian, he should not even attempt to go near the aisle designated for the vehicles used in such operations. Safety should be adhered to first.
